Course Description:

 Group therapy is essential in meeting the needs of individuals in co-occurring disorders mental health settings. Group therapy is the treatment of multiple patients at once by one or more healthcare providers. (Malhotra and Baker, 2022) Research shows that group therapy is a highly effective way in treating individuals in mental health settings. Unfortunately, many clinicians and paraprofessionals do not get the necessary training that is needed to be an effective group leader. This training will provide participants with the necessary tools that are needed to be an effective group leader that is needed to meet the needs of clients.

Course Goals:

1. Describe 2 elements of group therapy.
2. List 3 key essentials and advantages of group therapy in co-occurring treatment settings.
3. Identify characteristics of each of the three stages of groups (e.g., beginning, middle, and end stages).
4. Identify 2 to 3 of Yalom’s twelve therapeutic factors that influence change and healing in group therapy.
5. Demonstrate 2 clinical skills needed to lead and co-facilitate therapeutic and support groups.
6. Review management issues of client’s confidentiality during group therapy sessions.
7. Identify specific ways from the checklist items to utilize when preparing and facilitating groups.
8. List 2 types of groups and settings that are most appropriate for various kinds of problems and who is appropriate and not appropriate for group therapy. (Video)
9. Identify the purpose of clinical supervision group work for supervisors in healthcare settings.
10. Identify research based best practice group therapy models and techniques.

Dr. Lucy R. Cannon is the CEO/Owner of LEJ Behavioral Health Services, LLC, a training and consulting company in Metropolitan Atlanta. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the states of Georgia and Alabama. She has the following certifications, LCSW, CCDP-D, and MATS.  Dr. Cannon has been a clinician, supervisor, director, and consultant of mental health and co-occurring disorders programs in inpatient and outpatient healthcare organizations and psychiatric hospitals in various states in the United States and Camp Zama, Japan.  She is an Adjunct Professor at Clark Atlanta University Graduate School of Social Work. 

She is also a Facilitator/Speaker for the United States Navy Reserve Command. She is a trainer for various local and national healthcare organizations. She also serves on various healthcare organizations boards of directors, and advisory boards. She is an advocate for consumers with co-occurring disorders. She is very committed to educating students and training mental health professionals in the addiction and mental health fields.
